Abstract

Alec Osborn reflects on his career as in engine design and outlines the design and development of two engines which greatly influenced his career; the BRM (British Racing Motors) V16 Formula 1 engine, and the Perkins 6.354 engine, used in diverse marine, agricultural and industrial applications. Gives details of the creators, conception and development of these engines. Goes on to highlight the importance of and difficulties associated with engine design for application. Reflects on the progress made in process development and people development during his long career. Concludes with a series of reflections and lessons learnt, together with some thoughts for today's young mechanical engineers and engineering students.
