Abstract

Alec Osborn reflects on his career in the design and development of a wide range of internal combustion engines at BRM and Perkins. Highlights include the design of the BRM Formula 2 engine; involvement in BRM Formula 1 H16 and V12 engines; the "Wing" car and working as Chief Engineer of Perkins Engines. The design and development of the BRM (British Racing Motors) V16 engine and the Perkins 6.354 is discussed. Mention is given to key figures who influenced the design of the BRM V16 engine including: Harry Ricardo; Harry Mundy; Peter Berthon and Raymond Mays. The Perkins 6.354 was designed by Gordon Dawson and was used in various marine agricultural and industrial applications. In conclusion a series of reflections and career lessons is presented together with some thoughts for today's young mechanical engineers.
