Abstract

Emphasises the importance of engineers and engineering in helping to meet the environmental challenges that confront the planet and humanity in the 21st century. Provides a brief overview of Andrew Ives' career in the automotive industry including his time working for the Lucas Group Research. Science, technology and engineering and their inter-relationship are defined. Argues that society’s views should change to see engineering of greater importance than science and technology in developing sustainable solutions to world’s environmental problems. The time it takes to turn research into commercial products is highlighted. Mention is given to the "Limits to Growth" project which considered how the planet would cope with population growth at the same time as depleting natural resources.
