Abstract
The first James Clayton lecture. Provides a history of the development of the jet propulsion gas turbine in Great Britain, concentrating on the story up to the first flight tests in May 1941. Discusses the design and testing of three editions of the first experimental engine; design and testing of the first flight engine (W1), and the experimental version of it (W1X). Also discusses later engines.
