Abstract
Provides an overview of Sutherland’s career focusing on four key periods: early years in the machine tool industry; working for NASA; working for the Medical Research Council; working at Brunel Institute for Bioengineering. Provides examples of solutions to engineering problems that he has seen throughout his career. Examples include the successful deployment of the Apollo telescope's solar array system; the development of a portable insulin delivery system; the NASA glovebox facility; and new technology for the manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients or medicines.
