Abstract

Examines how mechanical engineering has developed to meet the changing needs of society. Describes early machines and the impact of the industrial revolution. Considers how mechanical engineering has become integrated with other disciplines. Gives the use of robotics in medical engineering as an example of today's mechanical engineering innovations. Concludes with a look to the future asking whether mechanical engineering will continue to exist as a separate discipline. Emphasises the importance of academic engineering research and the need to attract young people into engineering undergraduate degree courses.
