Abstract
Reflects on Millard's career, education and employment. Focuses on three main areas of management, namely project management, strategy and leadership. These three interact to address the titled issue of 'Managing to improve the world through engineering'. Project management processes have only recently, in the past 60 years developed in order to encourage large projects to be completed within time and budget constraints. The progression from Ganff chart drawings to Program Evaluation and Review Technologies, used for project planning are discussed. The importance of cost to project completion against work completed is charted, and cases illustrating the necessity of strategic vision are given. The leadership position that the Institution is taking, such as inspiring the younger generation with engineering, engaging with members and energy sustainability are highlighted as priorities.
